For nearly 20 years, it’s had people shamelessly dancing and singing along with every listen. It’s the song that single handedly made Polaroid cool again. “Hey Ya!” was a crossover hit, sitting on top of the Hot 100 for nine straight weeks, going platinum in a number of regions around the globe (Australia, Italy, Norway, Sweden, UK, United States), it became the first song to ever reach 1 million paid downloads on iTunes, eventually winning the Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. The single was seen as a breakthrough for the hip-hop industry, being one of the first hip-hop songs to be widely played on adult contemporary stations. But the catchy funk-tune is one of the most deceivingly happy-sounding songs recorded. Andre 3000 goes to great lengths in proving that most people don’t care about the deeper meanings within songs. They just want to dance. Let’s take a look at THE DARKER MEANING BEHIND HEY YA! ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos, photos or music used in this video. MGMT and their Little Dark Age

The two met in 2001 and began producing electronic music in their freshman year of university. They bonded over a love of neo-psychedelia from the 1970s and 80s, bands like Chrome, Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized. The pair started creating loops of sounds and noise in their dorm rooms. They didn’t start singing over their tracks until they started writing pop songs. The idea of pop-music was a joke to these two, it’s why they initially called themselves “The Management,” it was a stab at the corporate side of the music industry. They were in charge. This video essay covers MGMT's entire discography from Oracular Spectacular to Congratulations to their self-titled and even to their forthcoming release, Little Dark Age. The group have been trying to shed their past personas that gave, "Kids," "Time to Pretend," and "Electric Feel" to the world. They've yet to replicate the successes of those singles, but by choice. I used a clip from the excellent podcast, Song Exploder. How TAME IMPALA Makes Music

Speaking on the themes of their three released albums: Innerspeaker (2010) Lonerism (2012) Currents (2015) We'll dive into the mastermind behind the whole project, Kevin Parker. It’s been 881 days since the last Tame Impala record and unless the next one is out by 4/20/18, it’ll be the longest we’ve had to wait for a new album by the Australian outfit. It’s not so much that I’m impatient for new music, I’m just really curious to hear what Tame Impala does next. Taking the intricacies of the psychedelic rock genre and combining it with the sugary melodies of modern day pop music, has made Tame Impala one of the most notable “indie” artists today. And that popularity is well earned as all three of Tame Impala’s LP’s have received universal acclaim with fans constantly juggling over which is their favourite. Every new release has moved Tame Impala’s sound forward, with the latest being the largest diversion yet. But before I can tell you more about Tame Impala and their music -- we need to talk about Kevin, Parker. He IS Tame Impala. Are Tame Impala still together? YES! Just on a hiatus. Did Tame Impala break up? No. Is Tame Impala working on a new album? Yes, Kevin Parker says new music is his priority and would like to release a new Tame Impala album in summer 2019. Tame Impala - Patience Tame Impala - Patience Tame Impala - Patience was the first single release from his upcoming album.

It debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and sold more copies than their last 3 did combined. Yet at home in the UK, the Arctic Monkeys are nearly a household name, where all 5 of their albums have debuted at number one and where their first album still reigns as the fastest selling debut album - by a band - in the UK. (363,735 copies sold in its first week!) They’ve headlined the largest festival in the UK. Twice. They’ve changed the way record labels distribute music today and they’re one of the only bands to win Best British Group and Best British Album on three separate occasions. So what was it about AM that finally helped them break into worldwide markets? Let’s look back at their journey and find out who the f*** are Arctic Monkeys? This music video essay is on the English rock band Arctic Monkeys, from their local beginnings to their rise to the world stage. I talk about their 18-song demo, Beneath the Boardwalk which helped thrust them into popularity after it was uploaded to the internet. Their debut record Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not is still the top selling album by a band in the UK. Their sophomore Favourite Worst Nightmare came back with even more energy. They worked with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme for their third album Humbug introducing a new desert rock sound. They then diverted for their fourth album Suck It and See before finally releasing AM, the album that gained them worldwide attraction. Let’s dive into what audiences loved so much about AM. The grooves recalling their R&B roots, falsettos, their new personas and more. Will the Arctic Monkeys' new album Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino continue the band's streak of success? We'll just have to wait and see. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. They are used for education and discussion purposes.

Five years ago, ‘Royals’ sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 overtaking artists like Katy Perry (Roar), Miley Cyrus (Wrecking Ball), Lady Gaga (Applause) and Britney Spears (Work Bitch) -- some of the most prominent female pop artists of the late 2000s. ‘Royals’ sounded nothing like it’s competitors, breaking all of the rules with a significantly slower tempo, unique melodic structure and Lorde’s subdued vocals. Her style would mark a shift in the pop landscape delivering a voice with substance among what Dave Grohl considers “stripper pop.” When Lorde arrived on the airwaves, pop radio would never be the same. And that might sound like an exaggeration until you listen a little closer. This is how Lorde’s Royals changed pop music. ------------------------------- Can Lorde sing? Yes, Lorde can sing! Lorde is an alto, the lowest register for female voices. However on Royals she kicks it up a notch and sings at the mezzo-soprano level. Did Lorde write Royals? Lorde claims to have written Royals in 30 minutes when she was about 15. She took inspiration from the luxurious lifestyles portrayed in a lot of pop music. She drew inspiration from Lana Del Rey and Kanye West and Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne project. Can Lorde see music? Again Lorde claims that she can see sound/music and they appear in different colours. She says ‘Royals’ appears as gold and ‘Green Light’... well as green. Did Lorde sing for South Park? No. Sia has actually confirmed that it was her who sang in South Park’s parody episodes of Lorde. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM, The James Murphy Story

Let me explain. You see, in the early 2000s New York was going through a “rock renaissance.” Interpol, The Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were just starting out. But they were all very nostalgic for New York’s past, resembling bands like The Ramones, Talking Heads and The Velvet Underground. By no means did that take away from these acts but a young James Murphy saw it as simply following tradition. He dreamed of a different New York, one where the sounds clashed, new musical styles originated and the people danced. Murphy sought to reinvent New York’s legacy, but he didn’t know where to begin. Murphy was quickly approaching 30, he couldn’t sing that well nor did he look the part of a frontman. ------------------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. The adored indie-anthem assisted The Killers in becoming one of the most successful rock bands of the 21st century all the while still managing to hold its own in 2018. It only ever peaked at number ten on the UK singles chart, but get this, since it’s reissue in 2004 it’s rarely ever left those very same charts -- appearing in the top 100 singles every year since. In fact the track is spending it’s 204th week on the chart as I speak. In 2005, it was the sixth most downloaded song on iTunes. It’s now the 12th most downloaded rock track in the UK ever. Last.fm revealed that it was the most listened to track since the launch of their online music service with more than 12 million plays and counting. Mr. Brightside is the most streamed song of any track released before 2010. Averaging nearly a million plays per week across all major streaming platforms. Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, VH1 and countless others have called it one of the best songs of the decade. Not bad for a band’s first song. The Killers have never not played that song live. That’s not a hyperbole, it’s the truth. They’ve literally never played a gig without playing Mr. Brightside. Flowers himself isn’t bored of singing it. And somehow it has stood the test of time while it’s popularity is showing no signs of dwindling. So what is it about Mr. Brightside that has listeners returning a decade and a half later? Let’s take a look at THE LEGACY OF MR. BRIGHTSIDE ------------------------------- Who wrote/sings Mr. Brightside? The Killers How old is Mr. Brightside? Approximately 15 years old now. When did Mr. Brightside come out? Mr. Brightside premiered on BBC Radio 1 in 2003 and was re-released in 2004 by Island Def Jam Records. Which album is Mr. Brightside on? The KIller’s debut Hot Fuss. What does Mr. Brightside mean? What is Mr. Brightside about? The track is focuses on an unfaithful lover and ultimately moving on from the failed relationship. How long has Mr. Brightside been in the charts? Mr. Brightside is spending its 15th year on the UK Top 100 Singles Chart. While it has left the charts, it manages to find its way back year after year. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. It took them from a notable British act to the most important rock band on the planet. It was profoundly human, compositionally creative and carried themes that are just as -- if not more potent today -- as they were 20 years ago. OK Computer marked the end of an era, setting a new path for rock music. Without it, Muse, Coldplay or Arcade Fire wouldn’t exist as they do now. In Radiohead’s attempt to subvert mainstream trends and conventions, they ironically became more successful for it. Creating their most conceptually important release and one of the greatest albums of all time. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos, photos or music used in this video. BON IVER + KANYE WEST, Finding Your Voice

07:46
Without Kanye West, Bon Iver might have never made 22, A Million. Here’s why. The idea for this video came directly from one of my patrons, Andy! Support the channel on Patreon: http://bit.ly/Middle8-Patreon Let’s talk music: Twitter: http://bit.ly/Middle8-Twitter Instagram: http://bit.ly/Middle8-Instagram Listen to the Middle 8 Spotify playlist: http://bit.ly/Middle8-Spotify Written, Voiced and Edited by Frank Furtado #boniver #kanyewest #middle8 ------------------------------- Justin Vernon’s story is nearly a cliche by now. His band broke up, him and his girlfriend broke up and to top it off he got sick with mono before escaping to an isolated cabin in the winter. There a broken human poured himself into his music and crafted a critically-acclaimed, platinum-selling, emotionally-dense folk album. Then he proved it wasn’t a fluke with his Grammy winning follow up, Bon Iver, Bon Iver. But his third release is where we witnessed an unexpected shift - a reinvention. Complex called 22, A Million Bon Iver’s “most Kanye-sounding album yet.” Kanye West’s influence is definitely there - that is if you know what you’re looking for. And Vernon even takes it a step further. But what if I told you 22, A Million wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for Kanye West? Vernon’s relationship with Kanye West began with the track “Woods.” It features only Vernon’s vocals but they’re completely soaked in auto tune. Hip-hop’s favourite plug-in at that time. It’s where Vernon was inspired to use the audio tool. The year before, Kanye released 808s and Heartbreak - where auto tune was heavily used. But unlike T-Pain, West’s use of the plug-in serves more purpose. The auto tune removes Kanye’s individuality from his vocals, helping to produce a hauntingly personal album. 808s focuses on themes of loss, feelings of alienation and self-reflection. Themes Vernon was well acquainted with. (Canadian writer Stephen Marche viewed that West used "the shallow musical gimmickry of Auto-Tune, a program designed to eliminate individuality, and produced a hauntingly personal album.) And on “Woods” Vernon was in isolation, still “down on his mind” distilling his feelings into song but obscuring the emotion with auto tune. The effect was something Vernon could hide his vulnerability in. Kanye liked “Woods” so much he featured it on his next album. “Lost In The World” On a track about feeling lost and searching for fulfillment. Again Vernon could relate. Following his sophomore, Justin needed time to focus on his mental health and wanted to remove himself from the overwhelming attention the new album brought. So he fled to the Greek islands alone in search of himself. But he didn’t find what he was looking for in Greece. Believe it or not, it was Kanye’s words that helped remind Vernon to look after himself. After hearing what he needed to, Vernon set forward to finish his next album. West recruited Vernon’s voice again for his album Yeezus before the two collaborated with Francis Starlite on the song “Friends." The track used a new voice effect created by Starlite, called the Prismizer. You can hear it’s first use on Chance The Rapper’s Colouring Book Mixtape. Using the Harmony Engine, the plug-in takes a lead vocal and splits it into multiple harmonies, like light through a prism. Francis created a beautiful electronic choir effect that could map vocals to a keyboard and manipulate it with the melody. Already a fan of auto tune, Vernon wanted to adapt the Prismizer for 22, A Million. But the effect could only be applied after the vocals were recorded. So Vernon and his engineer Chris Messina got to work on creating something that could generate the effect in real time. The final product was the Messina. A combination of hardware and software capable of producing the Prismizer’s effect on the fly. On 715 Creeks, Justin strips everything down to just his voice and The Messina. And it’s a testament to what Bon Iver does best on this album. And that’s celebrating the human voice. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. They are used for education and discussion purposes.

Their album Brothers saw their blues rock sound appeal to larger audiences -- and finally! After nearly a decade and five albums later, it was well deserved and perhaps overdue. The success of Brothers resulted in extensive touring and promo events, and the boys still delivered a quicker and catchier effort with El Camino just a short year later. Even with rock at quite possibly it’s lowest commercial state, The Black Keys released two smash albums at once. In 2014, the pair returned with Turn Blue, scoring their first ever No. 1 selling record. The group had spent so many years as an underground act, but when they finally achieved mainstream success and were quite possibly at the peak of their musical careers, they vanished. Which begs the question, what happened to The Black Keys? ------------------------------- Did The Black Keys Break Up? / Have The Black Keys split up? / Are The Black Keys broken up? No, the Black Keys are still together, they’re on an indefinite break and say they’ll eventually return to creating music together again. Are The Black Keys Working on a new album? The success of OK Computer had the band set out on an ambitious tour, with their largest performance set on the Glastonbury stage. It was riddled with technical problems -- a complete nightmare for Thom Yorke who was already burnt out on playing the album’s material. But it was a tour that wouldn’t end for another year and a half. The mindless cycle of creating albums then touring them was destroying Radiohead. When they had finally gotten to a place where they could take a break and not be forgotten, Thom was left catatonic. Experiencing intense depression, the success and subsequent tour of OK Computer put his mental state in a place he never wanted to be. OK Computer had become an instant classic, but now expectations for a worthy follow up were high, as critics and audiences looked at Radiohead to carry the genre forward. In their pursuit, Radiohead suffered bouts of writer’s block, leading to self-doubt and the near break-up of the band. Had they released another album in the same vein as OK Computer or The Bends, they might have become the biggest band in the world. Instead, they released Kid A in quite possibly the greatest left turn in music history. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos, photos or music used in this video. It’s been used in ads, TV shows and films. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song and remains the Verve’s most definitive single. It launched the band into stardom. And it’s arguably one of the greatest songs of the last 25 years. It feels grand and that’s thanks to its orchestral elements. The Verve’s frontman, Richard Ashcroft was almost ready to scrap the song until producer Martin Glover put the strings over top of it. That’s when Ashcroft really got excited. But that’s also where The Verve’s biggest problem lied. The Verve’s Bitter Sweet Symphony uses a string sample from Andrew Oldham Orchestra’s symphonic version of “The Last Time.” The song was inspired by The Rolling Stone’s first major single, “The Last Time” The Verve cleared the sample with Decca Records but The Verve didn’t think to get the permission for the underlying Stones track that inspired the composition until after their track was completed - and why would they? The orchestral version was only inspired by the Rolling Stone’s track. For those rights, they needed to talk to Allen Klein, the “music business boogeyman.” He first said no, but then granted them a license. The Verve says the deal was initially for a 50/50 split but when the single started to perform well, Klein claimed that The Verve broke the license agreement and used a larger portion of the sample than agreed upon. Klein ended up suing the The Verve for plagiarism. The band decided to settle out of court thinking it would be cheaper than fighting a legal battle that might not go their way. Klein, demanded 100% royalties and songwriting credits attributed to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. So remember that Grammy Nomination? It had Jagger and Richards name on the ballot too. What song did bittersweet symphony steal from? It didn’t “steal” exactly. They used a sample and got the license for it but failed to get the license for the track that inspired the song they sampled. What song did bittersweet symphony sample? It’s melody has become a global sports anthem. And while it might sound like it’s played on a bass guitar that sound is created by Jack White's semi-acoustic guitar brought down an octave by a guitar pedal. The band never used a bass guitar until the album that followed. And that had to do in part with the band’s obsession with the number three. - They only ever used three colours on their album covers, promotional materials and on stage. - Their third album was recorded in three days - Jack White likes to throw the number onto the end of his name. - His record label is Third Man Records - He wrote a song for Loretta Lynn that was exactly 3 minutes and 33 seconds long… Alright I might be stretching it with that last one. But where The Stripe’s rule of three was most evident was in their sound. Since they played as a two-piece on stage, aside from vocals, each of them could only play one instrument at a time. The group would add more elements to their minimalist composition over time, but always came back to rock’s three main ingredients of: Guitar, drums and vocals. They found liberation in limiting themselves. It forced them to be creative with a small tool kit. And there is a quality in that simplicity. Seven Nation Army has become timeless. There are more people who know the tune than those who even know it’s authors. Making Seven Nation Army The Last Great American Folk Song. ------------------------------- Who did seven nation army? Alongside The White Stripes, they led a new rock revolution. Their 2001 debut, Is This It was a decade-defining record that introduced the template for a new era of guitar-based music. A movement that spawned a slew of rock bands which would evolve into the alternative and indie rock scene. [The Black Keys, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture, The Killers, Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, The Shins and Arctic Monkeys.] Four albums later and not much else from their catalogue has really come close to recapturing the immediacy of Is This It. There are some great tracks in their later releases and the group developed into fine musicians, but their debut currently remains their most celebrated effort. We’re now approaching six years since the group’s last studio album. (2013, Comedown Machine) and with the recent news of The Strokes plotting a global comeback for 2019 -- 20 years since their formation -- I don’t know if I should be excited or not. The Strokes have had a fairly odd and inconsistent career. They’re plagued to always be measured against their debut. And for a brief moment, they really did burn very brightly. Leaving me and plenty of others to ask, was that really it? ------------------------------- The Strokes FAQ Are The Strokes still together? Are The Strokes broken up? Yes, The Strokes are still together. No they did not break up. The group has been on hiatus since 2013’s Comedown Machine. Recently the group announced festival and tour dates for a 2019 comeback. This could mean we’ll see new music from The Strokes in 2019 as well. Are The Strokes good? The Strokes are a great garage rock band. Give their record Is This It a chance and decide for yourself. Are The Strokes British? No, The Strokes are from New York City however their initial record label, Rough Trade, was located in the UK. Are The Strokes touring? The Strokes are planning a global comeback in 2019 with festival and touring dates on the way. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. The single was accompanied by a self-made music video featuring archive-footage spliced between clips of this promising new star. And then “Blue Jeans” arrived. The nostalgic aesthetic, the wistful vocals, the captivating pouty-persona. It was a remarkable one-two punch from an unknown singer that made it difficult to not pay attention. Vampire Weekend have made one of the best pop trilogies of the modern day. While going from massively disputed to quite possibly the most respected band in the indie scene. And what makes their execution even more memorable is that they’ve done this while evolving with each ensuing album. Their progression feels so natural and yet they’ve remained recognizably Vampire Weekend. If you listen to their albums in order, it makes perfect sense -- like it was exactly what the group hoped it to be from the very start. Visually they even look connected. But their musical arc is just as much about Rostam Batmanglij’s evolution as a producer and Ezra Koenig’s maturation as a writer. A story of a band growing up. ------------------------------- Vampire Weekend FAQ Are Vampire Weekend still together? Is Vampire Weekend back together? Did Vampire Weekend break up? No, Vampire Weekend did not break up. Yes, the group are still together. Although Rostam has stepped away from the group, Ezra and the other members just broke their six year hiatus with their fourth album, Father of the Bride. Does Vampire Weekend have a new album? Yes, Vampire Weekend’s fourth album Father of the Bride was released Friday, May 3, 2019. How many albums does Vampire Weekend have? As of 2019, Vampire Weekend have four albums. Where did Vampire Weekend go to college? The group met at Columbia University. Are Vampire Weekend good live? That’s for you to decide. If you really love the band, you’ll love seeing them live. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos, photos or music used in this video. It was King Gizzard’s 8th album that caught the attention of critics and music fans. Delivering a mixed bag of rock, folk, jazz and heavy metal, the nine songs on the album seamlessly transition into one another -- and if you happen to put it on repeat -- it’s final moments connect perfectly with the opening track. Effectively creating a never-ending album. A Concept Album, Nonagon Infinity. Two years prior, King Gizzard released I’m In Your Mind Fuzz. The first four tracks carried a very similar concept, sounding like a continuous 12-minute jam rather than individual pieces. For the boys, it sparked the idea of creating an entire album that didn’t stop. Something that was just one big song. They began to consider that if all the songs on an album were going to link together into one giant sequence, where would it end? That’s when the infinite looping album idea clicked. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. When we listen to Unknown Mortal Orchestra's music, or any music for that matter, we associate our own meanings with a track. Ruban doesn’t want you to think his music is about his life, he’s just trying to improve your day with music. “If I made someone’s life easier with the album, that’s the closest reason that exists for making art that I’ve been able to find.” But the lyrics and moods of these tracks are entirely dependent on the headspace of Ruban. He invites new -- and sometimes strange, experiences into his life, hoping to capture those feelings in his music. Whether that’s becoming a father, indulging in rampant drug use or inviting a second partner into his marriage. Ruban is willing to put himself in some emotionally terrifying situations for the sake of his art. This video essay uncovers the themes behind psychedelic-pop outfit, Unknown Mortal Orchestra. The life experiences of Ruban Nielson, the band's creator is responsible. Their debut record was very mellow as Ruban Nielson had just started a family. His sophomore was recorded in a basement after returning home from a drug-fueled tour. He then invited a second partner into his marriage for this third. Here's what Ruban has to say about his latest record, Sex + Food. Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. They are used for education and discussion purposes.

What Happened to Q. LAZZARUS?

The intimate close-ups and the villain’s raspy voice cut between shots of his ill-fated victim, is unsettling. And the synth-pop track in the background only compliments the uncomfortable atmosphere. Dubbed “The Buffalo Bill Song” the track is Goodbye Horses by Q. Lazzarus. It’s the biggest song that never was. It never charted during its release in the late 80s and was the artist’s only hit. It’s become somewhat of pop-culture phenomenon later appearing in films, parodied in Kevin Smith’s Clerks 2 and Family Guy. It was in a few video game soundtracks (Skate 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV) and has been covered by a hand full of artists over the years. But with it comes one of the many mysteries of modern Hollywood. Shortly after releasing Goodbye Horses, Q. Lazzarus disappeared from the public eye, never to be heard from again… That was until a few days ago. When I wrote this script, Q. Lazzarus’s end was very much still a mystery. Musician Kelsey Zimmerman tweeted out that she was searching for Q and someone claiming to be Diane Luckey responded. She claimed to be alive but has no interest in singing anymore -- she found the music industry scary and wants nothing from it. In fact she’s a bus driver in Staten Island, has been for years. Which makes sense considering her cab driving days. Zimmerman also found a lawsuit filed against a Staten Island bus company in 2015 -- filed by none other than Diane Luckey. Which only supports her story. She posted a selfie before deleting her account, it’s safe to say it was Q. She’s glad people enjoyed Goodbye Horses but she’s much happier now. Link to Kelsey Zimmerman's post: https://www.facebook.com/kelsey.legg/posts/10156501117872488 ------------------------------- Who sings Goodbye Horses? Q. Lazzarus When did Goodbye Horses released? 1988 What happened to Q. Lazzarus? The video explains. What is Goodbye Horses about? According to its writer, William Garvey "the song is about transcendence over those who see the world as only earthly and finite. The horses represent the five senses discussed in the Bhagavad Gita and the ability to lift one’s perception above these physical limitations and to see beyond this limited Earthly perspective." What movie was Goodbye Horses in? Goodbye Horses became famous from the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs. It’s also been in Jonathan Demme’s earlier film Married to the Mob and later appeared in Clerks 2. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. Tough. #portugaltheman #feelitstill #billboard #middle8 ------------------------------- How To Make A Radio Hit with Portugal. The Man's 'Feel It Still' and Gotye's 'Somebody That I Used To Know' Portugal. The Man could never have predicted “Feel It Still” to become the astronomical hit that did. Over 150 million views on YouTube. 400 million listens on Spotify. It won a Grammy, that means something right? It was the most-Shazamed song in the country for seven weeks running. And that’s because if you’re still listening to the radio, you would have heard it across nearly every format. It was a crossover hit. A song that transcends genre, so widely accessible you can play it on nearly any contemporary radio station and it just works. It was the group’s first chart topping single. Going on to conquer the top spot on 6 Billboard charts and almost two others. Radio Songs Pop Songs Adult Pop Songs Alternative Songs Adult Alternative Songs Dance/Mix Show Airplay Taking Portugal. The Man from indie darlings to Top 40 giants in just weeks. And these charts are important. Labels use these rankings to entice radio stations to play these songs even more. You see, stations need to retain listeners to keep the advertising dollars coming in and the best way keep people listening is to play the biggest hits around. It’s why you hear the same tracks on rotation all day long. The more a track plays, the higher that rank goes up and the more a single sells. And the loop continues until listener fatigue kicks in and is replaced by something new. Since 2003, there have only been 12 songs to top 6 or more Billboard charts, including “Feel It Still” Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (2005) Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You" (2006) Gotye “Somebody That I Used To Know” featuring Kimbra (2012) Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring T.I. and Pharrell (2013) Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” (2014) John Legend's "All of Me" (2014) Nico & Vinz's "Am I Wrong" (2014) Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" (2014) Adele’s “Hello” (2014/15) Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk!," featuring Bruno Mars (2015) Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber (2017) You’ll see some familiar names from frequent hit makers, but only one of these songs has topped the same six charts as Feel It Still. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. Does GRETA VAN FLEET Sound Too Much like LED ZEPPELIN?

On the other side we have those who are happy to have a band reviving the hard rock sound of the 70s, bringing it to a new generation of listeners and into a market that’s oversaturated with R&B and hip hop. Regardless of which side you sit on, Greta Van Fleet’s singles are quickly gaining them fans, see them climbing rock charts and have them selling out shows -- all of this and the band have yet to release a full debut record. This video essay explores Greta Van Fleet’s recent rise in popularity, the band members, their EP Black Smoke Rising and their double EP From the Fires. I also reflect on bands of the past that have been tapped for sounding too much like Led Zeppelin, including: Rush, Billy Squier, Kingdom Come, Wolfmother and Rival Sons. But even Led Zeppelin have been known to steal lyrics and riffs from artists without crediting them. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. Their sophomore effort followed just a handful of months later -- taking them from nearly unknown session players to a hard rock powerhouse. But when the band shifted from their blues influence towards folk for Led Zeppelin III, a luke-warm response from fans and critics threatened their rise. Their success was being attributed to hype and aggressive marketing campaigns. In protest, Zeppelin would move away from the standard -- if not necessary way of selling records. Their fourth album would be left untitled and the band’s name, absent from the cover. Instead, mysterious sigils appeared -- one for each member of the group. They would strip everything away in order to let the music speak for itself. They would have to push their creative limits in order to progress -- experimenting with new production techniques and instruments. Guitarist Jimmy Page swore their fourth album would be their best. If it wasn’t, they’d give up and retire. What followed was one of the most iconic rock albums ever made. Setting Led Zeppelin on a path towards becoming legends of rock and roll. ------------------------------- Led Zeppelin FAQ Where was Led Zeppelin 4 recorded? Where was Led Zeppelin IV recorded? Led Zeppelin's fourth album was recorded at Headley Grange in Hampshire, England. When did Led Zeppelin 4 come out? What year did Led Zeppelin IV released? November 8, 1971 What do the Led Zeppelin 4 symbols mean? The feather of Ma’at, Egyptian goddess of justice and fairness encompassed within a circle. The emblem of a writer, belonged to none other than Robert Plant. The Borromean rings, depicting man, woman and child resided with John Bonham. A celtic knot portrayed a person both confident and competent was chosen by John Paul Jones. Finally, Zoso. Designed by Page himself, it wasn’t intended to be a word at all. It’s meaning remains a complete mystery. Why was Led Zeppelin IV called zoso? The band's name and title were left off the album. The only things left were the symbols the group created. Page's Zoso was the only one that appeared to form a word and it just stuck. How many copies of Led Zeppelin 4 have been sold? Led Zeppelin IV has sold over 23 millions copies in North America. With 37 million copies sold worldwide. Is Led Zeppelin IV the best album ever? That's for you to decide. It's arguably the group's best record. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos, photos or music used in this video. If you’ve ever attempted to get into the experimental group, you might have heard some otherworldly sounds that either had you listening closer or turning it off completely. Listening to Animal Collective chronologically may not be best way to dive into the madness. So where to start with Animal Collective? Animal Collective’s creative output from 2004 to 2009 was nothing short of astounding. 2004 - Sung Tongs 2005 - Feels 2007 - Person Pitch (Panda Bear) 2007 - Strawberry Jam 2009 - Merriweather Post Pavilion 2009 - Fall Be Kind EP Four amazing albums within a five year span -- each with their own definitive sound. Plus a noteworthy EP and not to mention one of the group’s members releasing a solo album credited with influencing vapor wave, released within that same period of time. I can’t recall another band or artist who have come close to matching the critical attention Animal Collective held at that period. They were arguably the indie band of that decade. There was nothing else out there like them and I doubt we’ll see a band as unconventional as them breakthrough again. Let’s review Animal Collective’s Golden Era, the best place to start if you want to get into the experimental group. ------------------------------- Animal Collective FAQ Who is Animal Collective? Animal Collective are the experimental pop group from Baltimore, Maryland. The band consists of Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Geologist (Brian Weitz) and Deakin (Josh Dibb). What genre is Animal Collective? Animal Collective are an experimental group. They’ve been considered neo-psychedelia, experimental pop, art pop, psychedelic pop, psychedelic folk, freak folk, avant folk, folktronica, noise pop, electronic and even ambient. What happened to Animal Collective? Nothing, the group have continued to make music as a group and individually. After Merriweather Post Pavilion, the group chose to stick to their oddities rather than pursuing the sound that saw them reach their largest audience. Is Animal Collective good? Is Animal Collective overrated? That’s for you to decide but plenty of their albums have received universal acclaim for their inventiveness and originality. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. So in 2010, Jai Paul releases his demo BTSTU on MySpace. And at the time, this was some cutting-edge stuff. It was dubstep and indie rock and r&b all in one song and it -- it just worked! He was taking a lot of elements from various scenes and putting them all into one accessible pop song. I mean you really had to hear this in 2011 to get it. But It just sounded like "this is what the future of music is gonna sound like," ya know? Anyways, it blows up. Music blogs begin to write good things -- gets called best new track and what not. UK radio stations start throwing it into rotation. THEN record labels catch wind of the single and start a bidding war to sign this guy. He eventually signs to XL Recordings. Things are happening for the kid. And as if that wasn’t enough, Drake drops a track that samples the song [Drake - Dreams Can Buy Money]. Beyonce drops a track that samples the song [Beyonce - End of Time]. It was a huge deal for someone coming out of the indie scene. Not even a year later, Jai Paul drops another demo called Jasmine. And by now, people are calling this guy the second coming of Prince. Like musically. Things go quiet for a bit and then BAM -- April 13, 2013, his album goes up on Bandcamp. But with no name and everything’s untitled. His label starts denying the release, pretty much saying they didn’t authorize this thing to go on sale much less be released. So what happened? The guys laptop got stolen. And whoever had it uploaded his unfinished album online... ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos, photos or music used in this video. Before James Murphy molded their sound. Before they beat Lady Gaga, Eminem and Katy Perry to win the Grammy for Album of the Year, Arcade Fire released Funeral. The definitive indie-rock album that carved them into the music history books. It seems that most of us have had a moment of transcendence with this album and perhaps because no band has sounded quite so emotionally affected. And rightfully so, the album was crafted at a time when multiple members had lost loved ones. Richard Reed Parry's aunts, Régine Chassagne's grandmother and William and Win Butler's grandfather all passed within the span of a year. When family members kept dying they realized that they should call their record Funeral, noting the irony of their first full length recording bearing a name with such closure. If the record is the funeral we are attending, then the band is supplying the eulogy. It’s music as catharsis. But how was Arcade Fire able to translate their grief into music that so masterfully provides such relief? Let’s explore EMOTION IN ARCADE FIRE’S FUNERAL. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos, photos or music used in this video. Even if you don’t consider them rock, you cannot avoid them. Imagine Dragons have consistently had a hit on the charts since their debut in 2012 -- meaning they haven’t left the public’s ears for six straight years. In fact they are the only artists to see four separate singles spend at least a year on the Billboard Hot 100. Their single “Radioactive” still holds the record for the most total weeks spent on that chart. They hold more number one hits on the Billboard rock charts than any other artist before them and they’ve accumulated over 20 rock music awards and just as many nominations. While they have a massive, dedicated fanbase who fill arenas around the world, they are by no means the most critically acclaimed group. In fact their albums have consistently been panned by critics and have rock fans disputing over the band’s questionable presence on rock charts. Like it or not, Imagine Dragons are the face of modern day rock - but how did we get here and what does that say about the current state of rock music? ------------------------------- Are Imagine Dragons rock? That's dependent on what you think. The band considers themselves "genreless." Some songs are more pop and others are more guitar driven. It really depends on the song. However because they standout against most pop music and are a band, they've generally been considered a rock band. Did Imagine Dragons win a grammy? Yes, their song Radioactive won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance. Are Imagine Dragons from Las Vegas? Yes, Dan Reynolds is from Las Vegas and it's where the band began taking off. Are imagine dragons making a new album? They just released their fourth album Origins on November 9, 2018. How did Imagine Dragons start? Dan Reynolds decided to start the band in 2008. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. You know him better as Lil Nas X. His track “Old Town Road” has spent the most weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 (19 Weeks). Cock-blocking Billie Eilish from reaching the top spot and destroying “Despacito”’s reign. It’s gone platinum in: Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Belgium, New Zealand, Germany, Poland, America, The UK and Australia 8 times! It surpassed Drake’s weekly streaming record (143 million vs 116.2 million for “In My Feelings”) He won Song of The Year at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, performed at the BET Awards, Glastonbury and posed on the cover of TIME Magazine. Lil Nas X has only been making music for just over a year. All of this is what a dedicated kid can do with an insanely catchy hook, a knack for making memes and a little luck. But there’s plenty an artist can learn from “Old Town Road”'s success. This is how Lil Nas X created the most popular song ever. ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos, photos or music used in this video. Now instead of me showcasing a list of 20 or so albums that you might listen to half of, I want to talk about 8 great albums from the first half of this year. There’s no filler here, these are albums that are great from front to back, they’re innovative in their own ways and most of all I think you’ll find these albums challenging as a listener. Some of it will push you outside of your regular realm of listening or you’ll find more music similar to your tastes. I didn’t choose albums just based on this, it’s just been a fairly experimental year for music in general. But without further ado, here are my favourite 8 albums of 2018 so far. (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER) Against All Logic - 2012-2017 Beach House - 7 KIDS SEE GHOSTS - Kids See Ghosts Parquet Courts - Wide Awake Pusha T - Daytona Tropical Fuck Storm - A Laughing Death in Meatspace U.S. Girls - In A Poem Unlimited The Voidz - Virtue ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video. If you’re paying attention, most of today’s best rock music is already being made by women. Women made some of the best albums of 2018. But you wouldn’t know that from looking at the charts though, or from tuning into alternative radio. And you would think with the introduction of streaming services that women would have a level playing field. But Spotify’s five most streamed artists of 2018 were all men. Spotify's five most streamed tracks were also all male. Guitarist and singer-songwriter Laura Marling said, “If you prevent women from seeing any examples of them achieving, then it prevents them from believing they can achieve it.” So let’s take a look at some of the exceptional women in rock today including: Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes Ellie Rowsell of Wolf Alice PJ Harvey Annie Clark of St. Vincent Mitski While it's true that there are plenty of excellent female rock artists out there today, who are inspiring young women, there's never been a shortage of inspiration. Women might just be rock’s last hope. ------------------------------- The Future of Rock is Female Spotify Playlist features music from: Alvvays Angel Olsen Beach House Courtney Barnett Florence + The Machine HAIM Lucy Dacus Melody’s Echo Chamber Metric Paramore Snail Mail Soccer Mommy The xx Yeah Yeah Yeahs AND MORE Listen here: http://bit.ly/Future-of-Rock-is-Female ------------------------------- Disclaimer: I do not own any of the videos or music used in this video.
